You are standing in front of the monument to the Unknown Bar Confederate, located in the centre of Zagórz. Why is there such a monument in our town? The Bar Confederation, called the first independence uprising, was established on 29th February 1768. Its goal was to oppose Russia and its interference in Polish affairs. The fighting began in April 1768. Several hundred battles and skirmishes were fought. The last clash took place in Zagórz – in November 1772. It was then that the Polish troops defending the Carmelites’ monastery capitulated. The monument in Zagórz commemorates these events. It depicts a confederate in a characteristic costume, standing next to his horse, as if he had just dismounted it and was looking out for his opponent. His right hand is on his saber, ready to repel an attack, and with his left hand he is calming the animal that seems to be covering the rider. The monument is made of silicon bronze and its author is Mr Piotr Zieleniak, a sculptor and lecturer at the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin. The square with benches and a multimedia fountain, which was created next to the monument, encourages you to relax and meet friends.
