Fotografia Monument to commemorate the victims of Zwangsarbeitslager Zaslaw The Zasław Forced Labour Camp (Zwangsarbeitslager Zaslaw), a German labour camp for Jews from the Sanok and Lesko counties of that time, existed in the years 1939–1943 in the village of Zasław (now a district of Zagórz). It was located near the Sanok – Zagórz – Ustrzyki Dolne railway line, on the site of the former Cellulose Factory. At the beginning of the camp's functioning, Jews from Zagórz were gathered here. From 24th June 1941 they were gathered from the entire Bieszczady Mountains, mainly from Ustrzyki Dolne, Sanok and the Sanok county, as well as about 2 500 Jews from Lesko. Prisoners were gathered in barracks and former industrial buildings. Many, due to lack of space, camped outdoors. Inside, craft workshops were created to produce products for the Waffen-SS. Prisoners performed many jobs outside the camp, mainly building and repairing roads. About 15 000 people passed through the camp. 10 000 people were murdered on the spot, and approximately 5 000 were transported to the camp in Bełżec. Executions took place in a forest called "Malinki" and on Gruszka Mountain. In the Zasław camp, prisoners brought from the prison in Sanok were also executed. In 1943, the Nazis covered up the traces of the camp with the help of prisoners who had to extract the bodies of the murdered, burn them at the stake, and throw the ashes into the river. At the place of crime there is a mass grave of those who were shot, a burial mound with an obelisk and a commemorative plaque (designed by Kazimierz Ciepielowski and Bronisław Bekalik). On a concrete square, with walls covered with granite setts, there are wire figures of two people connected by the stigma of death. The writer Kalman Segal, in his reportage novel On the Strange River Sambation (Polish title: Nad dziwną rzeką Sambation), included references to the camp in Zasław.
